Have you ever wanted to enjoy the amenities of a hotel without the cost of staying there overnight? The Hilton Waikoloa Village offers a day pass that lets you do just that! As a self-proclaimed princess, I do enjoy the finer things in life, but as a frequent traveler I also know when to be practical. On my recent trip to Hawaii, practicality won out for our accommodations and we opted for an Airbnb for all the amenities it included like a kitchen and multiple bathrooms. (Read more about how we found our Airbnb here: How to Find the Perfect Airbnb). This choice meant we didn’t get to enjoy certain aspects of staying at a hotel. We didn’t have a pool or any on-site restaurants and shops to explore. Well, on our last day on the island we decided to give hotel life a chance and purchased the Hilton Waikoloa Village day pass and man was it a treat!
What is a “day pass”
The day pass is a visitor pass to the Hilton Waikoloa Village valid for up to 4 people. The pass gives you access to a hotel room and all amenities at the hotel from 10am to 6pm. You are probably wondering: How much does this cost? Well it’s not cheap… The cost is $160 plus tax, but that’s the total! So if you have 4 people like we did, it comes out to about $45 each once tax is factored in. And for that price you get to enjoy so much! You get access to so many great things from the room to the pools. The best part? We did this our last day when we had an 8pm flight back to the mainland. That meant we were able to spend the day enjoying ourselves at the pool and then shower and refresh before our long flights home!
This was one of the most obvious reasons we were initially interested in the day pass. The Hilton Waikoloa Village has 3 amazing pools to spend the day lounging around. The pools include waterfalls, slides, hot tubs, and even an adults-only pool. There is something for everyone to enjoy! We spent most of our day at the Kona pool. This pool has a few bridges that go over the top of it, a massive waterfall and a pool bar(not a swim up one though)! The pools are all amazing and I wish we had more time to spend at each of them!
We got very lucky and had a clear sunny day when we visited despite all the craziness going on with Kilaeua at the time. Unfortunately, that meant a bit too much sun for those of us that burn easily. Be sure you have plenty of sunscreen on because that Hawaii sun is brutal! The normal lounge chairs around the pool do not offer much shade, but there is an option to rent a cabana for more shade. The cabanas are $100 for the full day and sit 2 people. That was a bit pricey for us so we opted for an alternate option: a half day rental. What this means is that starting at 1pm any un-rented cabanas are rented out for only $55 a piece. It comes with a safe for your stuff, a cooler, water bottles and servers from the pool bar come straight to your cabana to ask if you want anything.
In addition to the amazing pools, the grounds of the resort are home to a bunch of other activities! There is a lagoon on site where you can swim and snorkel to your heart’s content. You can also rent paddle boards and kayaks if you want to take one out in the lagoon. Or just sit and enjoy the white sand beach. Other things you can enjoy are an on-site dolphins experience and an amazing spa. Both of these come at an additional cost, but are conveniently located on the hotel property! The hotel itself is also gorgeous so you can always just take a walk throughout the grounds. The beautiful palm trees with the blue ocean backdrop makes for a relaxing stroll.
The Restaurants and Shops
Whether you want a fancy sit down meal or a casual snack by the pool, there is a restaurant on site for you. We opted for something in between and grabbed lunch at the Lagoon Grill on our day at the Hilton. I had one of the best burgers of my life and everyone else enjoyed their food too. They offer everything from burgers and sandwiches to Poke and salads. On top of all the other great parts of the hotel, the Hilton Waikoloa Village is home to some really great boutiques! If shopping is your thing(and it’s definitely mine!) the boutiques should be able to keep you busy for a good amount of time! They sell pretty much anything you can imagine and it’s all trendy and high quality. Definitely pop your head into the boutiques if you are looking for any gifts for family or friends!
When we discussed adding this to our plans, the biggest appeal for me was actually access to a hotel room. That may sound odd to you now that I described all the other great aspects of the hotel, but hear me out. I have taken my fair share of long flights and I have certain habits that make them more bearable. One of those is always bringing a few essentials (read about that here: My Carry on Essentials for Long Haul Flights). Another is to always try to shower as close to flight time as possible. There is nothing I hate more than boarding a long flight already feeling gross. Access to the hotel room meant I could shower and change into fresh clothes right before heading to the airport! It was the ideal way to end a relaxing day at the hotel and prepare for the long journey back to Florida!
Our day at the Hilton Waikoloa Village was absolutely amazing. I am so glad we splurged on the day pass. It meant I was relaxed and happy on my last day and was able to even enjoy the flight home a bit! I definitely recommend this to anyone visiting the Big Island who doesn’t want to spend their whole trip at a hotel but wants a plunge day by the pool!
