Airline points are every travellers’ best friend, but many don’t like being tied down to one particular airline. I have no such qualms about this. I have had my American Express Delta Gold Card since I was 21 and I love it. My family lives in a small town and Delta is one of the only airlines that flies in and out of our local airport. As a result, I was conditioned to love Delta from an early age. I have jokingly been called a “Delta Princess” by friends and I have embraced that. Delta is hands down my favorite domestic airline in the US. I have mentioned this card before as one of the ways I save money on travel, but I love it so much it deserves its own post! I honestly think the Delta Amex is one of the best travel cards on the market. There are honestly an endless number of reason I love this card, but keep reading to find out my top 5 reasons!

1. Card Perks
The benefits of this card are the number one reason I am obsessed with it. First of all, you get a free checked bag on every delta flight as a cardholder. This INCLUDES if you book basic economy! This is a huge perk since checked bags on most flights are around $30 each way at this point. You also get 20% off on board purchases so if you want that snack box, it just got more affordable!
Being a cardholder also gets you zone 1 boarding for your flight and a dedicated customer service line if you have to call for any reason. On top of all that, you earn 2 miles per dollar spent on delta flights and 1 mile per dollar spent on everything else. The perks of this card are some of the best I have found and I love it for that reason!
The sign-up perks are also AMAZING. When you first sign up, you get 60,000 miles after you meet a qualifying spend! That’s the equivalent of a round trip flight to Europe! You can also earn a $50 statement credit if you book a delta flight in your first 3 months. That’s like $50 off a flight! Sign up here to get these great benefits or keep reading to learn more!
2. Points are easy to use
Delta makes it super easy to redeem your points in a couple different ways. The first option is to use reward points to book your entire ticket. One way redemptions start around 12,500 miles and go up based on factors like distance and price of the flight if it was in dollars. I have gotten one way award flights to England for 30,000 miles and a round trip flight to LA from Florida for 27,000 miles. This varies in the same way normal flight prices vary but it’s super easy to redeem. And when you redeem you just pay a small fee of $5.60 each way. So that round trip flight I booked to LA? It cost me $11.20 out of pocket!
If you don’t have enough to cover the full cost of your ticket, Delta has another option available only to cardholders. This option is called “pay with miles”. The way it works is that you use your miles in increments of 5,000 for money off your flight (5,000 miles = $50 off). This lets you reduce the cost of your ticket by paying part of it with your miles! The only rule is you have to pay the balance of the flight with your delta Amex. Of course, you would want to do that anyways to earn more miles! I love Pay with miles and have use it pretty often to lower my ticket prices!
3. Earn status with Delta
For frequent travellers, having “status” with an airline is a coveted reward for your loyalty. As a cardholder, you have the ability to earn status with Delta by meeting a spending threshold on your card instead of meeting a qualifying amount spent on flights. This means that if you are the type to book flight deals and wouldn’t meet that qualifying amount, you can use your card spend to qualify instead. One of my friends used her card enough to reach gold status on Delta a few years ago and then was able to qualify for free upgrades on her flights!
During the year that I lived in England, I flew and used my card enough to earn Silver Medallion Status with Delta. For the next year, I qualified for upgrades to comfort+ on domestic flights and got priority boarding and other perks. I haven’t been lucky enough to earn it again, but maybe this year is my year! I’ll race y’all to medallion status!
4. Low Annual Fee
I know some of you saw the words “annual fee” and immediately were like “no thanks!” The annual fee is so worth it though! The annual fee is a low $95 (compared to some travel cards where it’s over $400). But what you get for that $95 more than covers the cost! For instance, if you take 3 one way flights and check a bag on each, you have already saved $90 in bag fees! You are also earning points towards free flights which are worth well more than $95 a year. Don’t write this card off just because of the fee. It more than pays for itself and is well worth the money!
5. Delta Customer Service
I have flown a wide variety of airlines and dealt with just as many customer service agents. Delta has the best customer service in the industry. I know that I can call up the delta skymiles service line with any issue and not only will they resolve it, but they will do it efficiently and be polite about it. They are also SUPER helpful if anything ever happens to cause you to change a flight. I had to re-route a flight last spring so that I could go to NYC on my way home to Florida from London because I got a job interview at the last minute. Thanks to Delta, I not only got to my interview, I ended up getting the job and it’s the job I currently work and love! They didn’t charge me the change fee and were just generally super create at finding me the lowest cost option. This is just one of many times Delta has gone above and beyond to help me and I’m forever loyal as a result.
